Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about microblading — from how long it lasts to healing, aftercare and your top-up appointment.
What is microblading?
Unlike a regular tattoo, microblading is a form of tattoo artistry where pigment is implanted under your skin with a manual handheld tool instead of a machine. I draw hair-like strokes with the tool to mimic natural hairs in your brows.
How long do your eyebrows last once you get microblading?
There are many factors that contribute to the duration of your microblading brows. Aspects such as aftercare, the condition of your skin, the oiliness of your skin and your daily routine can all affect how long your microblading lasts. Taking these into account, your new eyebrows can last anywhere from 6–18 months. Yearly top-ups are required thereafter.
How long does the treatment take?
You will need two treatments, both lasting up to 2 hours. Your second treatment must be carried out 4–6 weeks after your initial treatment. The final result isn’t determined until you have had your second treatment and passed the full healing period of 4–6 weeks.
Is microblading painful?
The treatment can be a little uncomfortable for those who are more sensitive. However, a topical numbing agent is applied during the treatment to keep this to a minimum, so it is completely comfortable for our clients.
What do I need to know before and after the procedure?
Do not drink alcohol 24 hours before treatment.
After your brows are complete there is very little redness. For 72 hours post treatment you will need to wash your brows with sterile water (boiled water that has cooled) to keep them clean. We will provide you with an aftercare cream to help the healing and protection of your brows. You will need to keep them free from make-up for 7 days, but can use make-up around the area — just don’t let it sit too close to the brow. Following correct aftercare is essential!
What is the microblading healing process like?
After your treatment, your brows will go through several phases during the healing cycle. A true reflection of the healed colour can only be assessed 4–5 weeks after the initial treatment. Immediately after the procedure the pigment is still sitting on the top layers of the skin and has not yet settled completely. The colour of the pigment will soften gradually.
Once the healing of the skin starts it will look like dry, flaking skin. This might give you the impression that the pigment is fading too quickly, however this is just superficial colour and dry skin being naturally removed from your eyebrows. Your eyebrows will be at their lightest during days 7–12 because the colour is being absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin. The skin cells then resurface to the upper layers, which is when the pigment is pronounced again.
What happens during the top-up (second treatment)?
The top-up is recommended 4–6 weeks after your initial treatment. During your follow-up appointment we will fill in any missing hair strokes. It is in this treatment we will add or lengthen hairs to achieve the ideal shape. This also helps us achieve depth in the colour. If you fail to attend your follow-up appointment within 6 weeks your results will fade and you will be charged at the full rate on your next appointment.
What if I wish I had built my eyebrows out further or darker?
At all our consultation stages we explain this possibility to our clients. If they are reluctant to build their brows out too much on the first or second pass, we are happy to add a third session to the treatment plan for an additional cost. Prices vary depending on the amount of work and time the third session will require.
Is everyone without contraindications a suitable candidate for microblading?
Some clinics or salons will perform microblading on all types of brows, including those that just require a monthly tint or shape. It is against our professional ethics here at Links of Beauty to perform microblading on clients who do not require semi-permanent make-up. We offer a consultation to everyone, however if we think there is a possibility to restore your natural brows within twelve months, we will devise a regrowth treatment plan as opposed to an appointment for microblading.
Microblading is an investment. Whilst lower priced treatments are available, we caution against visiting inexperienced and unqualified technicians.
We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone we deem not suitable for this procedure.
